Does your dog or cat meditate with you? Interfaith minister and animal chaplain Sarah Bowen contends that other-than-human beings do this naturally and have spiritual lives every bit as rich as ours. Meet this fascinating woman, author of Spiritual Rebel and Sacred Sendoffs, as we discuss these ideas, along with Sarah’s early life as a preacher’s kid (she brought a mouse to church and quoted Bible verses as grounds for keeping him there), and her current outreach via the Compassion Consortium (spiritual center for animal advocates), the Compassion Consortium Animal Chaplaincy Training Program, and as a contributing writer for Spirituality and Health.

About Reverend Sarah Bowen

REV. SARAH A. BOWEN is an award-winning spirituality writer and animal chaplain who serves on the academic staff of One Spirit Interfaith Seminary in New York City. She is a columnist for Spirituality & Health Magazine, and her work has also appeared in Tricycle: The Buddhist Review, Elephant Journal, mindbodygreen, and other media, as well as a wide range of podcasts.

She offers workshops on both modern spirituality and interspecies mindfulness practices, works with humans around animal grief/loss, and advocates for exploited and endangered species within both religious and secular contexts. You can often find her huddled over wildlife that has been struck by cars, giving each animal a sacred sendoff. Bowen is also a cofounder of Compassion Consortium, the first interfaith, interspiritual, and interspecies faith community. She holds a BA in Human Ecology and an MA in Religious Studies, and is joyfully engaged in postgraduate research in Humane Religious Studies and Anthrozoology.
